Baltasar Kormákur Eyes TV Show Set in EVE Online Universe

Baltasar Kormákur Eyes TV Show Set in EVE Online Universe

The world of movies and video games have been very closely linked but now with the advent of higher-budget television shows, it was only a matter of time before someone decided to use television as a vehicle for adapting a large-scale gaming experience.

According to Deadline, that man is one of Iceland's premiere filmmakers Baltasar Korm?ur (Contraband) and his video game of choice is the massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) EVE Online made by CCP Games with plans to produce a television show in that world with his production company RVK.

According to the story, the television venture will be "an original concept set 20,000 in the future within the interstellar EVE Online universe in which rival societies are trapped in the same space by a collapsed wormhole and characters from five warring factions battle it out in space ships."

To keep the players of the game involved, the series will take inspiration from user-sourced stories posted on the EVE Online website.

For many years, Korm?ur was mainly known for his prolific output of Icelandic films including 101 Reykjavik and Jar City, but he found a fan in Mark Wahlberg who helped to transform the Icelandic crime thriller Reykjavik-Rotterdam into the 2011 breakout hit Contraband. That went so well they've reteamed for the upcoming crime-thriller 2 Guns, bringing Denzel Washingto along for the ride. That comes out August 2.

Korm?ur is currently in Hungary filming The Missionary and hopes to get moving on a Christian Bale movie called Everest for Universal and Working Title. (Doug Liman also has a movie of that title in the works.)

As luck would have it, there was a huge event in Iceland four days ago surrounding EVE Online, covered by our good friend Adam Rosenberg of Digital Trends, just to give you some idea what a huge phenomenon this is.

You can read about that here.

New BEYOND: Two Souls Tribeca Film Festival Trailer!

New BEYOND: Two Souls Tribeca Film Festival Trailer!

Tribeca Film Festival played host to the official screening of Sony Computer Entertainment America's (SCEA) BEYOND: Two Souls gameplay which included a panel discussion with Game Director David Cage and the Hollywood cast on Saturday. Developed exclusively for the PlayStation 3 by award-winning studio Quantic Dream, creators of PS3's critically-acclaimed Heavy Rain, BEYOND: Two Souls has been recognized as an Official Selection by the Tribeca Film Festival for its impact on the Future of Film.

BEYOND: Two Souls delivers a gripping, non-chronological narrative that features performances by acclaimed actors Ellen Page (Juno, X-Men), Willem Dafoe (Platoon, Spider-Man), Kadeem Hardison and Eric Winter.

Releasing in North America on October 8, 2013, BEYOND: Two Souls takes players across the globe on a journey that explores 15 years of Jodie Holmes' (Page) life. The original story seems to have jumped right from the silver screen, as main character Jodie, aided by scientist Nathan Dawkins (Dafoe) discovers a connection to a mysterious entity, setting off a thrilling journey to discover the truth about life, death and who she is â€" a central theme that provides a rich and evocative narrative.

The exclusive post-screening panel featured actors Ellen Page, Kadeem Hardison and Eric Winter. During the discussion, led by moderator and video game journalist Harold Goldberg, they spoke of how their professional acting backgrounds contributed to their performance in this genre defining game. Additionally they discussed the challenges of working in a motion capture studio to produce such an epic story. Often void of any traditional inspiration such as costumes, props and environments, the mo-cap studio is a vacuum created to capture true performance.

"This has been a really intense and exciting experience for me, and one that I am extremely proud of," said Ellen Page. "I'm excited to see everyone's reaction to the extended scene we are going to be screening â€" and to feel the powerful emotion that David Cage instills in all his games."

"This is a momentous event both in the world of gaming and in the history of the Tribeca Film Festival," said Willem Dafoe. "'BEYOND: Two Souls' tells a beautiful story and the players can wholly participate in each scenario and choose the characters' action. This game is unlike any project that I've ever been involved with before."

Quantic Dream used cutting-edge performance capture technology that allowed the actors' performances and expressions to transcend the gaming medium, making the spectacular life of main character, Jodie Holmes, tangible and real. "Quantic Dream is incredibly proud to share this vision of storytelling in games that redefines and breaks the boundaries of what games can achieve. We hope that 'BEYOND's' recognition as an Official Selection of the Tribeca Film Festival will only act as a catalyst to create more emotionally-charged games that explore mature themes," said David Cage, founder of Quantic Dream.

The exclusive scene revealed at the Tribeca Film Festival, titled "Homeless," follows Jodie during an emotionally and physically challenging part of her life where she is homeless and must find the will to survive in dire circumstances. The scene explores the relationships she forms with other homeless characters and the challenges they face, including finding their next meal, struggling to survive and retaining their belief in humanity.

Ben Stiller and Kristen Wiig on The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Ben Stiller and Kristen Wiig on The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Twentieth Century Fox turned a lot of heads at its CinemaCon presentation last week with the first-ever reveal of footage from their upcoming The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, directed by Ben Stiller and starring Stiller, Sean Penn, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, Patton Oswalt and Shirley MacLaine.

Scripted by Steve Conrad and based on the 1939 short story by James Thurber (previously adapted for the screen in 1947 with Danny Kaye in the lead), the film follows the life of the titular Walter Mitty, a photo editor for LIFE magazine who spends most of his days inside his own fantasies. When he realizes that he's missed out on the adventures that life has to offer, Mitty decides to go on a grand adventure to Iceland to locate a missing photograph, thinking all the while of Cheryl (Wiig), the literal girl of his dreams, to help drive him forward in search of his true self.

ComingSoon.net had to opportunity to speak with Stiller and Wiig at a press conference following the footage and you can read about their thoughts on the release below, including details on filming on location, balancing the realistic tone with the story's fantasy elements and even how advice from Russell Crowe helped the crew face Iceland's harsh elements.

Q: Ben, you said this was your most fulfilling film experience. What was so good about working on this?
Ben Stiler:
You know, it’s just been such a full experience and [I'm not] kidding, we are still working on it. It’s been a very long and complex experience in terms of the development of the script with Steve [Conrad] and the story. I think it all starts with the material and the script that Steve wrote and what he was aspiring to in the script. So, I guess to be in that territory, for me, was a little scary because it was new. Looking at a movie and not looking at it as a director and not necessarily just as a comedy. Having different criteria in how to connect with an audience and tell the story in a way that serves the story and allows people to feel what you would hope they would feel. That whole process has been great and exciting. Then just working with the cast and the actors and how everybody, I think, felt working on the movie from the beginning. They all felt connected to what Steve had written and what we were trying to do. It’s had so many aspects. Working on the visual effects, going to Iceland, doing a scene with a comedic genius person. But seriously, it’s just a lot of different things and so that’s, I think, good.

Q: The film is very much about following your dreams and living your own life. Is there anything in your own lives that’s unexplored? Some desire that you have or some place that you want to go?
Kristen Wiig:
Like an actual place? Actually, it was very inspiring for me to watch Ben directing and acting in this movie, because I do hope to do that someday. Maybe direct something, so I feel like that was kind of a free class for me. To get to watch how it’s actually done. I don’t know how he wore so many hats on this thing and, also, it was a challenging movie to do with all the special effects, the CGI. Then he’s acting with age makeup. It was a lot of stuff. To watch him work and see how you do it while also being cool and nurturing and generous, I feel lucky to have watched that. It’s weird to talk about it when he’s right next to me.

Stiller: I’d love to travel more. I really look forward to traveling with my kids. I’m just waiting for them to want to travel with me.

Wiig: I want to travel with your kids too. That’s my second fantasy.

Stiller: No, you don’t. Believe me. You know, as far as going to different places, I’d love to go to Asia. I’ve been to Japan, but I’ve never been to China. I’d love to go to China. I don’t know. I like to go to places that are remote. I think I’d like to do that more, just sort of also explore, not having a structured work life someday. To have more free time to sort of see what happens.

Q: This film seems completely divergent from "Zoolander" and "Tropic Thunder." Was this kind of tone something that you really wanted to explore?
Stiller:
Yeah. I think that all came from Steve’s script, really. Steve and I talked about it. It was trying to find this reality that felt real, but also allowed for where the story goes. Because I do think it’s kind of a little bit hyper-real, but I felt like it was important. It was a tone that people always felt could be happening. Honestly, I think that, for any movie, the tone of the movie has to be consistent. That’s the key to a movie. In "Zoolander," it’s like a really crazy world -- or "Tropic Thunder." But you have to stay consistent. For this movie, I think it was a little bit different because the tone was a little more realistic, but not quite too [realistic]. It was intentionally a little bit stylized, too.

Q: Could you talk a little bit about the theme of the original short story?
Stiller:
The short story. I remember reading it as a kid in school and it stuck with me. I remember there was a lot of things, like the phrases in it, that I didn’t quite understand. I think the first time I ever read the phrase “Coals to Newcastle,” I didn’t know what it meant. It really stuck with me as I got older, the idea of the life that you lead being the one that you end up living as opposed to what you imagined it being. You get to a certain point in your life where you start going, “Wait, I’ve lived a lot of my life. I keep on thinking this is going to happen or I dream about this happening, and it didn’t quite happen. Yet, maybe.” So that theme of being in your life and kind of always thinking, "What do I want it to be?" Doing that, you sort of lose touch with the moment, was something that I thought, in Steve’s script, was really there. The ability to sort of be in the present moment. Walter is always thinking about what he wants to do or what he wants to be, but he’s not there in the moment.

Wiig: I think, no matter what kind of life you have, whether it looks one way to people or another way, you always have moments when you imagine a different life.

Q: You've said how much a fan you are of the script. Did it change much once the full cast came aboard?
Stiller:
First off all, I think it has a very Conrad-ian tone. I really think he has his own tone. As I’ve said, I’ve been a fan of his from other movies and we actually worked on another movie together that hasn’t gotten made. I knew him a little bit and he’s a really flexible writer. He likes to rewrite and he likes to think of actors. I know when Kristen came aboard, he got really excited, because it was a chance for him to imagine her voice and get more specific with who Cheryl was. He enjoys that process and I think that, for me and Steve, the year we spent working on the script before we went to the stages of pre-productions, a lot of time was spent trying to hone in on the tone we were talking about. In terms of the voice for Walter, I always felt like he had a clear sense of what that was. It was less about tailoring the voice and more about trying to get the story to a place [we liked]. He has a lot of very amazing images and moments that happen, and I think we both worked towards trying to make it a story you could believe could happen, because it goes to these sort of amazing places. That was a lot of what the work was.

Q: The Walter character seems very realistic.
Stiller:
Realistic, yes. I think it’s impossible for Sean to not be realistic.

Q: Was it was difficult to find an equilibrium between reality and imagination for the film?
Stiller:
I think it’s really an editorial process more than anything, the balance of the fantasies to reality. In the writing of the script, I think it was the idea, like I said before, of the tone and trying to keep it consistent, allowing for this world where you could buy that these things would happen and a guy would go off into the world and jump on a plane and meet these people. There are movies I remember like "Local Hero," that I remember having a really great tone. It was comedic and kind of quirky, but also real and soulful. I got inspired by movies like that or like "Being There." I think with Sean, it was really about making this character a real person, because he’s kind of mythic in the story. When we do meet him and finally see him in the story, I want him to be a real person. Sean actually, himself, really brought a lot of ideas for what Sean O'Connell in the movie would say, that were great and became part of the script. He also brought a lot of humor to it. Again, it’s the type of movie where I wanted the audience to be able to enjoy what was happening in the film on a level where they’re not sort of feeling like “now it’s serious, now it’s funny.” It’s all kind of okay and Sean brought that to it. You have to remember, Sean is a really funny actor. You know, he’s Jeff Spicoli, which is one of the greatest comedic performances on film.

Q: I think we were all surprised at how beautiful the footage is. I’m curious about the conversations you had with your cinematographer and how that partnership was formed.
Stiller:
Well, we had a pretty clear idea of what we wanted the movie to look like and I think that just comes from talking and looking at pictures together and references and watching movies together. Then, when you get to Iceland and it’s such an incredibly beautiful place and the light is so amazing that it’s hard not to shoot stuff that looks good there.

Wiig:: Yeah, the movie is breathtaking to see the whole thing. There are shots that are really amazing.

Stiller: I think that a lot of that comes from the diligence of, going out and keeping trying to get that moment. We were lucky enough to have this really great small second unit of like three guys. This great cinematographer named Erik Wilson, who shot a movie called "Submarine," a British movie. I had met him because our company had executive produced it a couple years ago, and he’s incredibly talented. He was our second unit DP, and every day him and Phil Nielson, who is our second unit director and Michael Luhrmann who’s an incredible AD, who does big movies, but he was our second unit guy. Every day they would go out, and we had a list of things we would try to get. And then some days I would meet up with them for a shot at the end of the day or at the beginning of the day, and we would keep on going back and back until we felt like we had a good version of stuff. Then we started a catalog of a lot of stuff that we could use. But then, honestly, we just got lucky. We got very lucky, because the weather in Iceland changes so quickly. There are scenes -- you saw a couple of cuts -- there’s a scene where he’s skateboarding down a mountain and we had two days to shoot it because we’d only be there those two days. The day before we were there, the whole mountain was just socked in and you couldn’t see anything. And then it miraculously opened up for us for two days. Things like that happened along the shoot. It was special.

Wiig: Yeah. It was kind of magical.

Stiller: I saw Russell Crowe in Iceland before because they were shooting "Noah" there. They were just leaving when we came and he said, (imitating Crowe) “You gotta dominate the weather.” And I was like, “Okay. I will make sure to dominate the weather. Thanks Russell.” But he was right. He was right because you couldn’t wait around for a cloud to leave. You just had to go and do it and it’s going to change, it’s going to be different. And somehow, the weather respects you for going forward. So it was an amazing time.

Wiig: Yeah, you got through that windstorm.

Stiller: Yeah. Well, the windstorm ended up being great. It helped us, because we had to shut down for a couple days and it was a point in the shoot where we all needed to shut down anyway and just take a second. It gave us a chance to rehearse more. So all of these things seemed to fall in place and it was just an amazing experience being there. It was great.

Q: I was gonna ask you about your scenes with nature in Iceland. There was a shot in the footage with a shark in the water. How did you film that?
Stiller:
Right. Yeah. That was just luck. What we did is we waited for the seas to-

Wiig: (laughs) We waited for a shark.

Stiller: We waited for a shark.

Wiig: We were so lucky he went right into the camera (laughs). We just put a piece of meat right over the-

Stiller: We waited for swells to come up because we needed a storm, which, literally in the last two days that we were there the swells came up big enough so that we could shoot the scene, so that we could jump in the water and get the trawler out there. The light condition just ended up being what it was which was like this Icelandic light and again we got lucky enough that it was consistent enough for a couple of days.

Wiig:: But Ben was like in the water fully, doing all of that stuff.

Q: So no real sharks?
Stiller:
Oh yeah. No, no. We had fake sharks (laughing). Still working on the fake sharks.

Q: Kristen, we’ve seen you as a variety of characters on "SNL." Did you enjoy the fact that with this movie, you could play different versions of your character?
Wiig:
Yeah, it was kind of like the best of both worlds because of the different fantasies that Walter goes into. He imagines different versions of me because I’m his love interest in the movie and yeah, it was kind of like a good meeting of those two worlds. In movies you’re obviously the same character, same wardrobe, same everything for months, whereas "SNL" is different every four minutes or something. Yeah, it was fun to do that.

Stiller: Can I say something?

Wiig: Yeah.

Stiller: I just think Kristen is -- I wouldn’t say an underrated actress, because I feel like people haven’t had the chance to see you in roles like this -- She’s just so realistic and so funny. That’s really not an easy thing to do and to be and I think what’s exciting for me in this movie is people seeing you in that and yet she also gets to be really Kristen funny too. But, I think that’s why she’s so successful as an actress and a comedic actress is that, people can feel she’s a real person too and that’s just a crazy combination of things that not many people have.

Q: Was there anything from the 1947 version of the film that carried over?
Stiller:
There was not much, because I really feel like that movie is wonderful on its own and Danny Kaye was so talented in such specific ways that I am not. I did not want to attempt that. The thing I did learn, because John Goldwyn, our producer, his grandfather did that movie. We’ve had the same sort of experience of putting the film together where, as you try to figure out the balance of fantasy and reality, how that works, and fantasies that you shoot but you don’t end up using, how to tell the story and moving the story forward while still having time. Going to the fantasies but not going to the fantasies for too long so the story can move forward, because the audience really wants the story to move forward, but yet, the movie’s about the fantasies. Apparently, they had those same issues when they were making their movie and so we learned that that’s been a constant thing with the Mitty story.

Q: Kristen, we see you singing David Bowie's "Space Oddity" in the footage. Are you a particular Bowie fan?
Wiig:
I am a big David Bowie fan. That was a little bit intimidating to know that I had to sing that song, but Ben described that scene to me. Very early on, he kind of had that imagined a while ago, and I was so excited. I took guitar lessons and recorded the song in New York. It was kind of a dream. I got to pretend I was a recording artist for a couple days.

Stiller: Yeah. That was exciting to hear her record it in the studio, because she’s a really good singer, and, what was it like, Electric Lady Studios?

Wiig: Yeah.

Stiller: So it was like, a pretty famous studio.

Q: Was being on location and witnessing the Northern Lights as inspiring as we all imagine?
Wiig:
It’s beautiful, yes.

Stiller: Incredible.

Wiig: We were at a restaurant and you couldn’t really see them, so we all hiked up this crazy mountain and watched them. It was one of those, like "where are we?" moments.

Stiller: It’s actually in that scene -- the scene with the pilot in the pub. There’s like a bluff outside the helicopter in one shot and we all went out to that bluff in the middle of the night and it was incredible.

Q: You said you’re still working on the film. What’s the current stage of post production?
Stiller:
Just the visual effects and editing, and basically where you’re at in a movie at this point when it’s coming out at Christmas time. So, yeah. That’s actually been a great thing to have the time on a film like this to really figure out the best balance in the story.

Q: Ben, how tricky is it to balance producing, directing and starring? Also, did you have a particular connection to Bowie?
Wiig:
I’m gonna talk about you first.

Stiller: Okay, okay.

Wiig: I had worked with Ben just a little bit when he hosted "SNL" and we got along really well. I’ve been a fan of his for a long time. Seeing him be the director and, you know, he’s in his costume and then, two seconds later, he’s behind the camera and totally and completely Walter and there for you as an actor. Again, I know I’m repeating myself, but just watching him do all of those different jobs so well and so calmly and so patiently was, you know as an actor you never wanna see the director freaking out about anything. So, you feel very safe and taken care of. And also, he’s very organized and knows exactly what he wants which is so great as an actor. We would rehearse and he just, like you were saying, this has been a passion project. That term is gonna get thrown out there a lot, for years, and it’s so exciting to be a part of a movie with someone who’s had this movie in his brain and his heart for years and years and years. To be a part of that, you feel really lucky that he’s brought you into to his little club.

Stiller: Yeah. First of all the Bowie song is just an amazing song. It has that emotion and it’s always had that and, it was exciting to be able to use it in this context. I felt like the way it fits into the story, and the way that Steve used it, we got to this point and this scene which was sort of how the fantasy and reality come together for Walter, and that was what that came out of. That song, and what he mentioned in his head, and what he imagines and what he does, it all just seemed to come together over that song. I love that song and that era, that Bowie era. "Changes" has always been another favorite Bowie song of mine. In terms of the acting and directing thing, it’s just a lot of prep time. I was lucky enough on this movie to have a lot of prep time, so we had time to work on all this stuff before hand, and then we were lucky enough to have great people who came on board, both in the crew and the production designer and cinematographer, costume designer, everybody. Then, with the actors who came on and really got it and were excited to be a part of it, you know Kristen would say something and then she’d do a rehearsal and say “what if I said this?” or “what if I said that?” It’s incredible and great. It adds so much, so that process, when everybody’s there and sort of on the same page, that’s all you can ask for, and then it kind of goes from there and it is what it is.

Box Office Results: Oblivion is Cruise's Biggest Opening in 7 Years

Box Office Results: Oblivion is Cruise's Biggest Opening in 7 Years

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.

Tom Cruise was back in a big way this weekend, starring in Joseph (TRON: Legacy) Kosinski's Oblivion (Universal) alongside Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Melissa Leo. Although an estimated opening of $ 38.1 million might not sound too impressive, it's actually Cruise's biggest opening for a movie since 2006's MIssion: Impossible III, directed by J.J. Abrams. That movie's sequel was a huge global blockbuster but it had a slower rollout into IMAX theaters before expanding nationwide, which was the original plan for Oblivion as well. Roughly 323 domestic IMAX theaters accounted for $ 5.5 million of the movie's domestic opening weekend.

Last weekend, Oblivion debuted in 52 countries where it grossed $ 61.1 million and this weekend it added another $ 33.7 million internationally ($ 1.6 million from IMAX) after opening in nine additional territories, bringing its international total to $ 112 million.

Brian Helgeland's Jackie Robinson biopic 42 (Warner Bros.) dropped to second place with a strong 34% hold, bringing in $ 18 million in its second weekend with $ 54.1 million grossed in ten days.

DreamWorks Animation's family comedy hit The Croods took third place with $ 9.5 million, down 28% from last weekend, to bring its own gross to $ 154.9 million. It's already the animation studio's 14th highest grossing movie, which may be why they've already announced a sequel.

Scary Movie V (Dimension Films) dropped 55% to fourth place with $ 6.3 million for the weekend with $ 23 million total.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (Paramount) took fifth place with $ 5.8 million and $ 111.2 million total after three weeks.

Derek Cianfrance's crime-drama The Place Beyond the Pines, starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta and Dane DeHaan, expanded into 1,542 theaters after breaking into the Top 10 last weekend. It moved up to sixth place with $ 4.8 million and $ 11.5 million since opening in late March.

Olympus Has Fallen (FilmDistrict) remained in seventh place with $ 4.5 million with an impressive $ 88.8 million grossed to date.

The remake of Evil Dead (TriStar/Sony) took eighth place with $ 4.1 million and $ 48.4 million after three weeks, followed closely in ninth place with Jurassic Park 3D (Universal) with $ 4 million and $ 38.5 million grossed to date.

The Top 10 grossed roughly $ 98 million which was down once again but only off 18% from this weekend last year when Steve Harvey's Think Like a Man (Screen Gems) opened in first place with $ 33.6 million followed in second place with Zac Efron's The Lucky One (Warner Bros) with $ 22.5 million

Opening in just 381 theaters, the religious baseball movie Home Run (Samuel Goldwyn Films) scored an impressive 12th place showing with $ 1.6 million, while the Sundance hit Filly Brown (Lionsgate/Pantelion Films) grossed roughly $ 1.3 million in just 188 theaters.

By comparison, Rob Zombie's latest horror film The Lords of Salem (Anchor Bay Films) brought in an estimated $ 622 thousand in 354 theaters.

Clark Gregg Offers an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Update

Clark Gregg Offers an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Update

Source: Screen Rant
April 20, 2013

Attending the Tribeca Film Festival to promote his second directorial effort, Trust Me, the multitalented Clark Gregg spoke with Screen Rant about his return as Agent Phil Coulson in ABC's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.".

“I don’t know how you could not change going through what he went through,” Gregg says of Coulson's state of mind during the show. “I think if he hadn’t gone through some kind of change, it wouldn’t be any good. That said, I don’t know if he understands how much he’s changed.”

For the time being, the method of Coulson's return is going to remain a mystery. Gregg promises, however, that fans won't be disappointed.

"When Joss described to me the mystery," he explains, "…and the complexity and the unanswered questions about Phil Coulson standing there trying to deal with this, I found it so fascinating and so true to the world of the comics and mythology in general as I understand them that I was immediately in.”

While we may not yet know exactly the method of Coulson's return, it sounds like his resurrection will be kept a secret from some of the Earth's mightiest heroes.

"[S]ome level of deception must have been perpetrated on the Avengers,” Gregg teases. "It must have been. I think."

The Star Wars News Roundup - 4.19.13

The Star Wars News Roundup - 4.19.13

Episode VII and Spinoff Movie News Summary

The big news of the week came from CinemaCon in Las Vegas. ComingSoon.net was there for the theater trade show:

Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm announced today at CinemaCon in Las Vegas that Star Wars: Episode VII will hit theaters in the summer of 2015 and that every summer after that will offer a "Star Wars" film, alternating with one of the standalone films.

We knew they were targeting "Episode VII" for 2015, but a summer date had not yet been confirmed. Also, while it was known they were working on standalone films, the fact that we'll be getting a "Star Wars" movie every summer is a new development. We don't know how many standalone films they are planning on making at this time in addition to the new trilogy.

While this certainly sounds great, it also sounds pretty aggressive as far as a schedule goes. It took about three years between each of the previous Star Wars films. If Disney hopes to have Star Wars: Episode VII out by the summer of 2015, they basically need to start filming in the fall. Then you could assume a Han Solo film or Boba Fett film would fill in between the next couple of years with "Episode VIII" arriving in 2018. We'll see if they stick to that schedule. In the meantime, both Forbes and MTV wrote editorials about whether or not Disney could crank out Star Wars movies at that rate and maintain quality.

ClevverMovies interviewed Kathleen Kennedy at CinemaCon and asked her about her new role at Lucasfilm and carrying on "Episode VII." Will it be in IMAX? 3D? What will the spinoffs be? Will J.J. Abrams direct the full trilogy?

Meanwhile, TrekMovie interviewed long time J.J. Abrams composer Michael Giacchino. They asked him if he might score a Star Wars movie. His reply is below:

Does that mean, you will be onboard for the next Star Wars film, which J.J. Abrams is set to direct?

All I can tell you is that the thing that excites me most about a new Star Wars film is the possibility of hearing new John Williams music. I would much rather hear John Williams? Star Wars score than my music for Star Wars.

We'll see what comes of this as well!

Meanwhile, on the humorous side, Jimmy Kimmel and Harrison Ford had fun with his tight-lipped responses about Star Wars news. Then things go bad. See for yourself:

Looks like they all patched things up afterwards:

Then on "Parks and Recreation," Patton Oswalt ad-libbed a filibuster containing his story idea for Episode VII.

That then got the following response from J.J. Abrams on Twitter:

Entertainment Weekly then took things up a notch by making a fan movie poster of the epic film. I'd actually pay to see that.

Star Wars Television

Late last week, TheForce.Net caught wind of a potential Star Wars television show called "Star Wars Reclamation." It was posted by someone anonymously on IMDb. While it smelled questionable at the time, Lucasfilm confirmed with TheForce.Net that the whole thing was a load of bantha poodoo. Expect more fake scripts, fake plots, and fake spies as the films progress.

Around The Web

This week Star Wars actor Richard LeParmentier passed away. He played Admiral Motti, the first man choked by Darth Vader, in "A New Hope." Memorials went up on TheForce.Net, USA Today, and Yahoo UK:

After defying Lord Vader aboard the original Death Star, Admiral Motti became a symbol of the Empire's over-confidence. But the actor Richard LeParmentier has become a favourite amongst fans? and now, has sadly passed away.

Richard LeParmentier, who will be remembered for his role in 'A New Hope', was an accomplished actor who appeared in a number of classic films - performing alongside James Caan in the '70s classic, 'Rollerball' and appearing as Lt. Santino in the animated classic, 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'.

In fact, in his long career, Richard delivered a number of iconic lines? including the classic "Now that's what I call one seriously disturbed toon." But he will always be remembered for his over-confidence in the Empire. And perhaps his lack of faith (which Lord Vader found disturbing)?

Our condolences to his family and friends.

The Huffington Post - George Lucas in Love! Lucas has set his wedding date to Mellody Hobson - June 29th. It will be a day long remembered.

You may remember "Star Wars Uncut," the version of Star Wars where fans filmed their versions of every bit of the film. Now "Empire Uncut" is on the way. Here's the trailer:

BorderMail.Com spoke with Terrence Stamp about his brief role in "The Phantom Menace."

"When we closed the Palm Springs Film Festival, I was sat in the front row so couldn't sneak out at the end, and hundreds of people came up to me and said, 'Please make more films for us'. I understand that, because I don't go to films very much because they're all for kids. I don't want to see films for kids. I'm not interested in Harry Potter and Star Wars and special effects. I'm not interested in virtual reality. I like my reality to be reality."

Working for George Lucas on The Phantom Menace confirmed that view. "It wasn't my kind of thing," Stamp says. "I'd just arrived in Sydney one day when I got the call to do three days on Star Wars. I really didn't want to go but I went because I was going to be working with the wonderful actress who won the Oscar for Black Swan. I got on to the set and said, 'Where's the wonderful Natalie Portman?' And Lucas said, 'Oh, I've given her the day off. That's her. That bit of paper stuck on that post, that's Natalie.' I thought, 'I won't be doing many more of these'."

CinemaCon: 20th Century Fox Previews Its 2013 Slate

CinemaCon: 20th Century Fox Previews Its 2013 Slate

20th Century Fox launched the final day of CinemaCon with a look at its diverse 2013 slate. Starting with the animated projects coming up from their Blue Sky Studios, Fox unveiled a new Blue Sky logo that will debut in theaters with the forthcoming Epic. The new version features Ice Age's Scrat climbing up a blue surface which, when the shot pulls back, is revealed to be the edge of the "B" in the word "Blue."

Epic, which hits theaters on May 24, showed off the most recent trailer, which you can check out by clicking here.

Rio 2 then debuted an early teaser that has the feathered cast dancing to an instrumental Brazilian tune against a black background. Slowly, more more characters join in until Tracy Morgan's Luiz finally marches in with a pair of sunglass on his rear end designed to look like the film's logo. It then cuts away to Jemaine Clement's Nigel, who schemingly remarks, "Keep smiling. I'll be pooping on your party promptly."

Although the film won't hit theaters until 2015, the Blue Sky portion of the presentation ended with the very first look at Peanuts, timed for a November release to match the legendary comic strip's 65th anniversary, the trailer begins with a shot of the sun rising over a hill, pulling back to reveal that it's not a hill at all: it's the top of Charlie Brown's head. The design work is incredibly faithful to Charles Schultz's illustrations with only the slightest bit of "realistic" texturing.

On the heels of Blue Sky's presentation came Fox's other major animation studio, DreamWorks Animation with trailers for both Turbo and Peabody & Sherman.

You can watch the former by clicking here and catch the film in theaters on July 17.

The latter, meanwhile, matched the version previously revealed by Fox at their DreamWorks Animation preview, although it's been updated to reflect the new release date of March 7, 2014 and it now includes an additional tag at the end where Mr. Peabody is sitting receiving therapy from Sigmund Freud (voiced by Mel Brooks).

The DreamWorks Animation portion then ended with the first-ever teaser for How to Train Your Dragon 2. Opening on Toothless and a fully armored Hiccup gliding through a cloudy sky, the scenes follows the pair as they fly, revealing both characters' prostheses. Hiccup then gives Toothless a knowing nod and lets go, plummeting through the air. Toothless follows, both of them falling together until Hiccup suddenly activates squirrel suit wings in his armor and the vertical fall becomes a horizontal race. The teaser then ends with Hiccup on the ground, removing his armored mask to reveal that's he's quite a bit older than in the first film. He's still a young man, but now looks to be in his late teens or even early 20's.

Fox's live-action projects then took over the stage with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock arriving to screen the Red Band trailer for their upcoming The Heat. Hitting theaters June 28, you can watch the trailer for yourself by clicking here.

Trailers then followed for Shawn Levy's The Internship (which you can watch right here) and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (which you can watch here and view the new photo below). Those films arrive on June 7 and August 7, respectively.

Four brand-new trailers then followed. The first, for Brad Furman's Runner Runner, begins with Justin Timberlake's character losing money on an online gambling website. He goes to track down the site's owner, believing that he's been cheating and winds up forming an uneasy partnership with the immensely powerful man behind a criminal empire, played by Ben Affleck. Timberlake's character winds up working for him, "cleaning up his affiliate business." One scene has Timberlake getting beaten up by a group of guys and then coming to Affleck who, in full villain mode, delivers a quick monologue about how other jobs may be better suited for him. If he wants to own his own island, though, he'll go get beaten up if he's asked to and then come back and ask for more.

Also starring Gemma Arterton and Anthony Mackie, Runner Runner hits theaters September 27.

Ridley Scott's The Counselor then followed, showing off the film's impressive pedigree. Scripted by Cormac McCarthy, the film's cast includes Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz, all with extremely distinctive looking characters. Bardem, especially, is physically transformed with big, spiky hedgehog hair and brightly covered, garish outfits. Pitt's character looks very similar to his Killing Them Softly character in parts, but one shot has him dressed in an all-white cowboy outfit.

The film also teased a number of sexually-charged moments, including what looks to be a love scene between Cruz and Diaz and a sort of car lapdance on the part of Diaz on the hood of Bardem's convertible. The Counselor hits theaters November 15, 2013.

Walking with Dinosaurs offered a very intriguing look at the December 20 release. It's unclear whether or not the whole film will play this way, but the trailer has CGI dinosaurs against live-action backgrounds and the narrative looks like it plays out without any dialogue, teasing lots of epic shots of prehistoric beasts and their life in the wild.

James Mangold's The Wolverine finished off the trailers with a new one that features lots of quick shots and no dialogue with on screen text that reads, "The Hero. The Fugitive. The Warrior. The Survivor. The Legend." before finishing on The Wolverine. Although it's a quick shot, one of the big treats is the full reveal of Will Yun Lee's Kenuichio Harada in his full Silver Samurai costume.

Stealing the show, however, was an extended look at Ben Stiller's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. With cinematography that's equal parts Jacques Tati's Playtime and Sam Mendes' Away We Go, the fanciful comedy drama plays up the beautiful sadness of Stiller's protagonist's world.

In the first scene, Walter Mitty is looking at Kristen Wiig's character's profile on eHarmony. He's clearly got on a crush on her, but is hesitant to send her a message. When he finally tries to, his computer gives him an error. On the way to work, he calls customer service (the rep on the phone is played by Patton Oswald) and, asked to expand his profile, he reveals that he hasn't really done anything of interest his entire life. Later, he's seen with his sister looking at a travel journal that his father gave him before he died, realizing that it's still empty.

Wiig's character works with Mitty for LIFE magazine, but the offices are shutting down and doing one final issue. Sean Penn's character, an arctic explorer named Sean O'Connell, wants one of his photos printed, but the slide is missing and it's Mitty's job to find it.

We meet Mitty's boss, played by Adam Scott, who does an exceptional job portraying a real jerk. At one point, he makes fun of Mitty's fondness for David Bowie, mocking "Space Oddity." Wiig comes up to him later and tells him that she really like this song.

Deciding to have an adventure, Mitty commits to traveling to the Greenland to get the photo directly from O'Connell. We see him in a small bar, trying to hire a helicopter pilot, but finding that the guy is really drunk. He looks to the stage and imagines Wiig's character singing "Space Oddity," which plays as he runs to the helicopter, deciding to fly anyway.

Having to make a jump from the helicopter to a boat on the open water, Mitty leaps into the ocean by mistake and suddenly sees a fin in the water. A man on the boat shouts that it's a porpoise and he should be safe, but it's really a shark. Luckily, he's hoisted out of the water just in time.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty hit theaters Christmas Day and buzz from the audience following the footage suggest that it's going to be a serious Oscar contender.
